Duraform / Acetal (POM)

Duraform is from the line of acetal (polyoxymethylene, POM) copolymer. Acetal is an engineering thermoplastic used in precision parts that require high surface hardness, low friction and excellent dimensional stability. The Duraform range comprises a range of compounds having varied properties designed for use in wearing parts and applications where moisture absorption is a problem. They combine high rigidity with mechanical strength and afford good elastic properties, high toughness, dimensional stability and excellent frictional properties.

Advantages of Acetal based plastics

  • Chemically resistant
  • Low co-efficient of friction
  • Excellent wear resistance
  • Very low water absorption
  • Resistant to hydrolysis by base

Disadvantages of Acetal based plastics

  • Low impact strength
  • Low melting temperature
  • More rigid than nylons
  • Very high thermal expansion
  • Sensitive to acid hydrolysis and chlorine attack

Duraform can be produced with these additional features

  • Impact modified – (Improved Strength & Stiffness attributes)
  • Fiberglass reinforced – (Improved Strength, Stiffness & Dimensional Stability at high extrusion temperatures)
  • Fiberglass & Impact modified – (As above + Improved surface appearance)
  • Mineral reinforced – (Enhances Strength, Stiffness & maintains typical chemical resistance)
  • Glass & Mineral reinforced – (Excellent balance of mechanical properties combined with minimal warpage)
